Dorchester School District 4 marked a significant milestone with the grand opening of Woodland Middle School, a state-of-the-art facility poised to enhance educational and athletic opportunities for students in the community. Located adjacent to Woodland High School, the new middle school will provide a seamless transition for student-athletes that travel to high school to participate in sports programs.
The journey to this momentous occasion began four years ago with the groundbreaking ceremony, a moment captured in the photographs included in this article. The project has culminated in a modern educational institution designed to accommodate up to 700 students, boasting cutting-edge technology and facilities.
Mr. Benjamin Kennedy, principal of Woodland Middle School, expressed his enthusiasm about leading the institution. "This is a fantastic opportunity for our community. Woodland Middle School will bring together multiple programs that existed at each middle school and will create opportunities for future program growth, including dance." Kennedy said.
The creation of Woodland Middle School involved the consolidation of programs from St. George Middle School and Harleyville-Ridgeville Middle School, ensuring a comprehensive curriculum and extracurricular offerings. The school will feature a full sports program, competing in a league alongside teams from the neighboring Dorchester School District 2.
The current superintendent, Mr. Jeffrey Beckwith, highlighted the collaborative effort that brought the project to fruition. "Woodland Middle School represents the hard work and dedication of so many individuals. It's an honor to open this school and provide our students with the best possible environment for learning and growth," Beckwith stated.
Following the ribbon-cutting ceremony, registration for the upcoming school year began. Woodland Middle School will officially open its doors to over 400 students on August 8th, ready to embark on a new academic year filled with promise and potential.
