Dorchester, SC — This summer, Dorchester School District 4 initiated a new Summer Student Worker Program, providing students with a unique opportunity to earn money, acquire valuable work skills, and contribute to the consolidation of two middle schools into the new Woodland Middle School.
The program, which began earlier this summer, required students to go through an application process, including interviews and reference checks. Those who were hired demonstrated exceptional dedication and hard work, proving to be indispensable to the Facilities and Operation Department.
James Martin, Interim Chief Of Operations said "The students worked extremely hard and were an invaluable asset to our team. They played a major part in getting the teachers moved in the new Woodland Middle School". Summer Student Work Supervisor Elzye Harrison said "I was amazed at their timeliness every day and their drive to work".
The program concluded last week, with students receiving their final paychecks and enjoying a celebratory drop in pizza lunch as a token of appreciation for their efforts. The Superintendent and several district office staff members joined the students for lunch to say Thank You.
"We wanted to show our gratitude for their hard work and dedication," Mr. Martin added. "The pizza lunch was a small way for us to get together and say thank you for everything they've done."
The Summer Student Worker Program has been hailed as a huge success, with plans already in motion to expand and continue the program in the future.
We are excited about the growth and continuation of this program. It has provided invaluable experiences for our students and has greatly benefited our district operations.
As Dorchester School District 4 looks forward to the upcoming school year, the success of the Summer Student Worker Program stands as a testament to the district’s commitment to providing enriching opportunities for its students.
