Cafeteria Staff

The first day of school in Dorchester School District 4 began with a burst of energy and excitement as students, teachers, and staff returned to their classrooms. The day was marked by smooth transitions, district-wide support, and a sense of optimism for the year ahead.

The day started early for Superintendent Mr. Beckwith, who met with two local news stations at 5:30 a.m. in front of the newly built Woodland Middle School. The interviews highlighted the district's preparation and commitment to ensuring a successful school year. Assistant Principal Latorsha Bryant, also gave her first interview, confidently sharing her excitement for the school year and the plans to foster a supportive learning environment at Woodland Middle School.

The car rider lines at all schools ran smoothly, thanks to the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office, which provided essential traffic control. Their presence ensured that the morning drop-off was safe and efficient, setting a positive tone for the day.

District Office Staff made their presence felt across all schools in the district, showing up to offer support and assist wherever needed. All hands were on deck to support principals and their staff, ensuring that every detail was attended to and that the first day was as seamless as possible. Their involvement underscored the district’s commitment to a collaborative and unified start to the school year.

Each school in the district welcomed students with open arms. At Clay Hill Elementary School, Principal Mrs. Lemon ensured a warm and welcoming atmosphere for her students, while Mr. White at Woodland High School, Mr. Wolfgang at Harleyville Elementary, Ms. Mims at Williams Memorial Elementary, Mr. Busch at Odyssey Educational Center and Mr. Kennedy at Woodland Middle School all ensured a successful first day with their diligent planning.

The cafeteria staff across the district also played a vital role in making the first day special. Full of smiles and joy, they served up delicious lunches, including a crowd-pleasing dish of wings that had students eagerly lining up for more. Their enthusiasm and dedication to providing nutritious meals contributed to the overall positive atmosphere in the schools.

Maintenance staff were visible throughout the day, ensuring that the physical operations of the schools were functioning properly. From addressing last-minute fixes to ensuring that all facilities were in top condition, their hard work behind the scenes was essential in making sure the day ran smoothly.

The custodial staff worked tirelessly to keep the schools clean and welcoming. Their efforts ensured that classrooms, hallways, and common areas remained spotless, creating a comfortable and healthy environment for students and staff alike.

School nurses were on hand throughout the district, ready to meet with parents and address any health concerns. Their presence provided an added layer of comfort and reassurance, particularly for parents of younger students or those with specific medical needs. The nurses' dedication to student well-being was evident as they engaged with families and ensured that everyone was well-prepared for the year ahead.

Bus drivers were on the roads early to conquer the every-changing road closures thanks to Tropical Storm Debby and adapting to the new staggered bell schedule. We thank all of them for getting students to and from our schools safely.

First-day jitters were a common theme, especially among the younger students and their parents. At Woodland Middle School, some parents of 6th graders found it challenging to say goodbye for the morning. However, the compassionate and reassuring staff assured them that their children were in good hands, helping to ease any anxieties.

Meanwhile, at Woodland High School, Assistant Principal Mrs. Butler described the morning as busy but productive, with students navigating schedules, parking passes, and the usual first-day questions. The staff's readiness and positive attitude ensured that the day ran smoothly despite the initial rush.

As the first day of school concluded, it was clear that Dorchester School District 4 is off to a strong start. With dedicated leadership, community support, and a focus on creating a welcoming environment for all students, the district is well-positioned for a successful and rewarding school year. The excitement and optimism felt on this first day will undoubtedly carry through as students and staff continue their educational journey together as we empower minds and shape futures! #dd4family #back2school2024
