The Dorchester School District 4 school board meeting held on August 20th at Woodland High School was both inspiring and productive, with several key presentations and updates that showcased the district's commitment to excellence and community engagement.
The meeting began with a special recognition of the Woodland High School JROTC program, led by Major (Retired) John Logan Jr. and Sergeant First Class (Retired) Kevin Simpson. The program highlighted the cadets who successfully completed the JROTC Cadet Leadership Challenge over the summer. The JROTC Cadet Leadership Challenges are prestigious Brigade-level events held worldwide, designed to develop leadership skills among Army JROTC cadets. Each cadet who participated in this rigorous program was honored with a plaque and a promotion, presented by Superintendent Jeffrey Beckwith. This recognition underscored the district's pride in its students' achievements and their dedication to leadership and service.
Following the JROTC presentation, Dr. April Sanders, Interim Chief Human Resources Officer, introduced the district's new "Everyday Hero" employee recognition program. This initiative aims to spotlight the often-overlooked staff members who play essential roles in ensuring the smooth operation of the district's schools. Twice a month, the program will honor these unsung heroes with a certificate of appreciation and a commemorative coin from the Superintendent, symbolizing the district's deep gratitude for their exceptional service.
The first recipient of the "Everyday Hero" award was Jeff Dantzler, a dedicated technology technician whose tireless efforts ensure that all educational technology, from smartboards to student Chromebooks, operates seamlessly. Although Mr. Dantzler was unavailable to receive his award, it was presented to his son and fellow technician, Brantley Dantzler, in recognition of his father's invaluable contributions.
The meeting also featured a presentation by Tom McNeal, Director of the Dorchester County Emergency Management Department, who spoke about the impact of Tropical Storm Debby on the county. Mr. McNeal commended the district's outstanding efforts in sheltering and providing meals during the storm, highlighting the critical role the district played in supporting the community during this challenging time. Interim Chief of Operations James Martin honored several DD4 employees who went above and beyond in aiding the Emergency Management Department during the storm, recognizing Nancy Ross, Eddie Sue Hankins, Patricia Sanders, Ashley LeBlanc, Brenda Littell, Tyrek Simmons, Jimmy Lowry, Felix Ashe, and Elzye Harrison for their dedication.
Other notable updates included a report from Coach Sibert, Athletic Director, who informed the board of a new law requiring annual approval for the operation of booster clubs by each school district's board of education. The board approved the operation of both the Athletic Booster Club and the Band Booster Club, with the Athletic Booster Club planning upcoming officer elections.
Mr. Beckwith announced that the district received the "Stronger Connections Grant" worth over $310,000. This grant will fund programs for Socio-Emotional Learning, Drug & Alcohol Awareness, Anti-Vaping devices, and an E-Gaming program at Woodland Middle and Woodland High School to name a few. A special thanks to Mrs. Monica Tudder, Director of Exceptional Children, for applying for the grant.
The board also approved an updated calendar change due to Tropical Storm Debby. Superintendent Beckwith and his team ensured that the Fall Break would not be impacted, instead converting several workdays into make-up days and E-Learning Days. Mr. Beckwith will communicate these updates to teachers and staff promptly.
Before the board moved into executive session, Superintendent Beckwith acknowledged Mrs. Evelyn Infinger for achieving Level 2 Status as a board member, marking another milestone in the district's ongoing pursuit of excellence.
With smooth openings at all schools despite the challenges posed by Tropical Storm Debby, the August 20th school board meeting was a testament to the resilience and dedication of the Dorchester School District 4 community. Exciting developments continue to unfold, promising a bright future for the district.
