This October, Williams Memorial Elementary School (WMES) is turning pink in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. On October 1st, the entire school community will come together wearing pink to honor the memory of former teacher, counselor, and friend, Elizabeth "Beth" McMillan. Throughout the month, WMES will also be holding a fundraiser in her honor, with all proceeds going to the Susan G. Komen Foundation, one of the leading organizations in the fight against breast cancer.
Mrs. McMillan dedicated 35 years of her life to education, making an indelible mark on countless students and colleagues. She began her career as a 5th-grade writing teacher before transitioning into the role of a school counselor at WMES, where she became a vital part of the school and local community. Known for her cheerful demeanor, positive attitude, and resilience, she was admired for the way she approached every day with optimism—even after her cancer diagnosis more than a decade ago. Her love for children and education was evident in everything she did, from her work with the Tiger Token Store to her day-to-day counseling, always fostering a sense of community at WMES.
Despite her battle with cancer, Mrs. McMillan refused to let her illness define her or take her away from the school she cherished. She remained a pillar of strength and hope at WMES, showing her unwavering dedication to both her students and her colleagues. This year, as the school planned to celebrate her retirement, they instead honor her memory and her remarkable contributions to the St. George community.
The fundraiser will continue throughout October, and for just $1, students, staff, and community members can contribute to a cause that was close to Mrs. McMillan's heart. All proceeds raised will be donated to the Susan G. Komen Foundation, supporting the fight against breast cancer and aiding in vital research.
Williams Memorial Elementary invites everyone to join in the efforts to celebrate Mrs. McMillan's life and legacy by wearing pink and contributing to this meaningful cause. Her spirit of compassion, dedication, and resilience lives on, as the WMES family continues to be inspired by her lasting impact. The kick-off will be October 1st at 9:00am.
