On Wednesday night, Woodland High School came alive with excitement as Dorchester School District 4 kicked off its second year of the Youth Soccer League program. The initiative, led by Assistant Athletic Director Wylie McCall and elementary principals Jeremy Wolfgang, Ruth Mims and Lisa Lemon, is designed to provide elementary-aged students across the district with the opportunity to participate in organized sports. For many students, this league offers their first-ever experience with soccer, helping to introduce the sport to a new generation of players.
The district-wide program has quickly become a beloved tradition for students and families. Parents registered their children through their respective elementary schools, which formed teams and selected coaches. The collaboration involved school principals, staff members, and community volunteers, making it a major effort to organize and execute successfully.
As the evening unfolded, it felt like the first real taste of fall in South Carolina. The cool, crisp air provided an ideal atmosphere for soccer, and as the sun set, the sky turned a beautiful pinkish-red, offering a stunning backdrop for the hundreds of students and parents who attended the event.
With six matches running simultaneously, Woodland High’s athletic fields were full of energy and excitement. Each team wore distinct-colored DD4 soccer shirts, representing their respective schools. In addition, some Woodland High athletes stepped in to serve as referees, helping guide the younger players through their games while also gaining valuable leadership experience.
Adding to the excitement was the newly formed Harleyville Elementary School Cheer Squad, making their debut and energizing the crowd with spirited cheers. Their chants and routines kept the atmosphere lively, as they encouraged both players and spectators throughout the night. The squad's enthusiasm was infectious, helping to build a sense of community and support around the young athletes.
The atmosphere was filled with joy and enthusiasm as kids ran across the fields, fully immersed in the fun of the game. The next round of matches is set to take place on October 24th at Woodland High School. As the Youth Soccer League continues to grow, it is fostering teamwork, healthy competition, and a love for the sport among Dorchester School District 4’s youngest students.
