On Thursday morning, Woodland High School’s stadium became a vibrant arena for the Dorchester School District 4 (DD4) Fall Unified Games. Coordinated by the DD4 Department of Exceptional Children, led by Director Monica Tudder, High School Coordinator Julia Drum, and DD4 Athletic Director Tydles Sibert, the event celebrated inclusion, athleticism, and community spirit. Students from across the district gathered to share in a memorable experience that showcased the impact of Unified Sports.
The DD4 Unified Games provided young athletes with intellectual disabilities (ID) the opportunity to enjoy sports alongside their peers. Unified Sports, a growing initiative championed by Special Olympics, has gained momentum in schools nationwide. SpecialOlympics.org reports that more than 8,300 schools in the United States now participate as Special Olympics Unified Champion Schools®, with a goal of reaching 10,000 by 2024. This initiative fosters inclusive school environments by bringing students with and without ID together in sports, student clubs, and leadership roles, creating an atmosphere that promotes acceptance and reduces stigma.
In Woodland High’s stadium, students participated in a variety of sports activities, including football toss, putting, soccer, track events, and bocce ball. Each event was tailored to allow athletes of all abilities to enjoy and compete confidently. Exceptional students from each DD4 school took part, supported by their peers who volunteered as assistant coaches, ensuring every athlete was able to participate fully.
The atmosphere was heartwarming, with Woodland High School students and others from across the district cheering on their exceptional teammates. This event was about more than sports; it provided a chance to form friendships, break down stereotypes, and highlight the unique abilities of each student.
After the games, the DD4 Food Services Department provided lunch, which was served by Woodland High students and teachers. This meal offered an opportunity for everyone to come together, share stories from the day's events, and celebrate each athlete's accomplishments.
The mission of Special Olympics, to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition for individuals with intellectual disabilities, was embodied in every moment of the DD4 Fall Unified Games. These opportunities foster physical fitness, courage, and joy, building friendships and tearing down social barriers.
This year’s DD4 Fall Unified Games in Woodland High’s stadium highlighted the power of community, as Dorchester School District 4 came together to champion inclusion, unity, and acceptance. The event left a lasting impact on all who participated, continuing the mission to ensure that every young person feels seen, valued, and included.
