The rain didn’t stop Williams Memorial Elementary School from holding its annual parade; instead, they brought it indoors, parading through the hallways. Students showed their love and appreciation for veterans by waving flags and cheering as the veterans walked the halls. The parade was led by faculty and staff members Tamika Fordham (Army Reserves), Pamela Britt-Jones (Navy), and Jordan Rickenbacker (National Guard). After the parade, the veterans made their way to the cafeteria for a light breakfast and a brief program. During the program, students delivered short speeches to express their gratitude, a poem was read, and the WMES Choir performed.
New this year was the addition of a Missing Man or Fallen Soldier Table at the entrance, honoring service members who lost their lives in duty. The round table symbolizes the everlasting concern for our missing service members. A white tablecloth represented the purity of their motives in answering the call to serve, and a single red rose in a vase reminded attendees of the lives and loved ones of these Americans. The single candle reflected our hope for their safe return, alive or deceased, while the empty chair symbolized the seat that remains unclaimed. The table was set with a rose, a plate with “HERO” written in salt, and a candle, leaving a meaningful impression on everyone who passed by. ~ Article by Ruth Mims, WMES Principal
