On Thursday, December 5, 2024, Woodland Middle School marked a historic milestone as it hosted its first-ever basketball games in the newly constructed school. The Woodland Wolves girls’ and boys’ teams faced the DuBose Middle School Wildcats in what was their second game of the season but the first on their home court. The event brought excitement and energy as students, staff, and the community came together to celebrate this special occasion.
The evening began at 5:30 PM with the Lady Wolves taking the court under the leadership of Head Coach Ronda Simmons, a Woodland High School alumna. Despite their determination and high energy, the more seasoned Wildcats secured a 24-4 victory. Coach Simmons expressed pride in her team, commending their effort and highlighting their progress as a young squad.
Adding to the vibrant atmosphere was the Woodland Middle School Cheerleading squad, whose well-choreographed routines and enthusiastic cheers kept the crowd energized throughout the night. Their support was instrumental in creating a spirited environment for the players and fans alike.
Following the girls’ game, the boys’ team took the court under the guidance of Head Coach Dawani Fladger and Assistant Coach Bryan Marvel, also a Woodland alumnus. The game was a nail-biter, with both teams exchanging baskets and keeping the score close until the very end. Despite their relentless effort, the Wolves fell just short, with the Wildcats claiming a narrow 26-21 win.
At halftime of the boys’ game, fans were treated to a unique and entertaining basketball shooting contest organized by the Woodland Middle School PTSO. Contestants, who purchased tickets for the chance to participate, competed in a creative twist on tic-tac-toe, making baskets to earn the opportunity to move their game pieces. In an exciting finish, Coach Simmons emerged victorious, adding a fun and memorable moment to the historic evening.
While the Wolves didn’t secure wins on the court, the night was a resounding success, symbolizing a new chapter in Woodland Middle School athletics. December 5, 2024, will forever be remembered as the day basketball officially debuted in the school’s new gym, with these student-athletes proudly cementing their place in school history.
The Wolves will look to notch their first home win when they take on Rollings Middle School on Thursday, December 12, at 5:30 PM. Fans are encouraged to come out, cheer on the teams, and continue supporting the Wolves as they build their legacy.
