Woodland High School recently witnessed a sweet showdown as Mrs. Lewis’s Food Nutrition class hosted their own version of Cupcake Wars. The competition brought out the best in student creativity, teamwork, and culinary skills, showcasing the students' ability to blend flavor and artistry while honing their public speaking talents.
The event featured five teams of students, each tasked with creating cupcakes based on a unique theme. Teams had to conceptualize their recipes, bake and decorate their cupcakes, build eye-catching displays, and articulate their creative process to a panel of judges. The presentations included a detailed explanation of the ingredients and the story behind each cupcake design.
Here’s a breakdown of the impressive themes and creations:
Team One: "Christmas Tree Lights"

Team Two: "Winter Wonderland"

Ginger snaps topping
Apple crumble-filled cupcake
Team Three: "A Christmas Comfort"

Team Four: "Elf on a Shelf"

Team Five: "Dashing Through the Snow"

The cupcakes were judged by a distinguished panel of WHS faculty members: Mr. Connelly, Mrs. Looper, Dr. Gadson, and Coach Thompson. The judges evaluated each team’s cupcakes using a detailed rubric that considered presentation, taste, creativity, and overall execution. Principal White attended the event and streamed the judging live on Facebook, allowing the entire community to witness the students’ remarkable efforts.
In the end, Team Five emerged victorious with their "Dashing Through the Snow" theme, impressing the judges with their cheesecake-filled cupcakes adorned with cream cheese frosting and marshmallow hats.
This exciting activity highlighted more than just baking skills. It encouraged students to develop critical public speaking abilities as they presented their work and answered questions from the judges. The competition was a resounding success, demonstrating the value of hands-on, engaging learning experiences.
Mrs. Lewis expressed her pride in her students, saying, “This activity challenged them to think creatively, work collaboratively, and step out of their comfort zones. I’m thrilled to see their hard work pay off!”
Congratulations to all the teams for their fantastic efforts, and a special shoutout to Team Five for their winning cupcakes! Woodland High School’s Cupcake Wars will surely be a memory these students—and the judges—won’t soon forget.
