Men of HES Volunteers

Harleyville Elementary School (HES) is taking an exciting step toward empowering young male students through a brand-new initiative, The Men of HES. This program, inspired by an idea from renowned educator Ron Clark and spearheaded by teacher Brittany Washington with help from Ashley Mitchum and Ophelia Gillens, is designed to provide students with greater exposure to positive male role models from the community.

With only three male staff members currently working in the school, the program addresses the need for more male mentors to help guide and support young boys as they navigate their formative years.

The Men of HES program focuses on pairing male volunteers with students who may be struggling socially or in need of additional encouragement. These volunteers spend quality time with the students, including sharing lunch and engaging in mentorship activities. By building meaningful connections, the program aims to boost the boys’ confidence and provide them with tools to succeed both academically and socially.

One unique aspect of The Men of HES is its collaborative structure. Volunteers and staff meet every other month to set goals, plan activities, and ensure the program is meeting its objectives. This dynamic approach ensures that mentors and students alike benefit from their participation. On Wednesday morning, December 18th, the launch event saw the Men of HES working the car rider line, high-fiving students and wishing them well.

HES is grateful for the strong community response, as the launch event saw the most volunteers yet. Their involvement not only highlights the importance of male mentorship but also serves as an example of the community’s commitment to the school’s success. Brittany Washington expressed her enthusiasm for the program, stating, “This initiative is about showing our boys that they have a network of support and people who believe in them. By connecting them with strong, positive role models, we’re building their confidence and helping them see all the possibilities for their future.”

The Men of HES is more than just a mentoring program—it’s a movement to create lasting change in the lives of Harleyville Elementary School’s young male students. With a focus on nurturing confidence, building relationships, and fostering a sense of belonging, this initiative is set to leave a profound impact on the school and its community.

Harleyville Elementary is calling on more local men to join this powerful initiative and make a difference in the lives of students. Together, The Men of HES are shaping a brighter future for the next generation.
