Ja'Kease Salley and his entire family at his signing.

Woodland High School celebrated a proud moment yesterday as senior Ja'Kease Salley officially signed his commitment to play football at Mississippi Valley State University on a full scholarship. Surrounded by family, friends, teammates, and school faculty, Ja'Kease took the next step in his athletic and academic journey, marking a milestone not just for himself but for the entire Woodland community.

Several influential figures took the podium to speak on Ja'Kease’s behalf, sharing words of encouragement and pride. Principal Michael White emphasized Ja'Kease’s dedication to academics, highlighting that he was a student first and maintained high grades throughout his high school career. Assistant Athletic Director Wylie McCall echoed this sentiment, commending his discipline both on and off the field.

Former Woodland basketball coach Tae Hanna reflected on Ja'Kease’s growth, both as an athlete and as a person, stating that his character is just as impressive as his skill set. He went on to call Ja'Kease one of the best athletes to come through Woodland High School, a testament to the talent and determination he displayed during his time with the Wolverines.

Head Football Coach Eddie Ford reminded Ja'Kease that his journey was only just beginning, expressing his pride in the young athlete’s accomplishments while emphasizing that hard work and perseverance would continue to be crucial in the next phase of his career. He reinforced the bond between Ja'Kease and the Woodland football family, closing with the powerful sentiment, "Once a Wolverine, Always a Wolverine." He also encouraged Ja'Kease to return to Woodland in the future to inspire the next generation of student-athletes.

Ja'Kease’s father took a moment to acknowledge the role of Ja'Kease’s mother and stepfather in raising him with strong values and a solid foundation. He also delivered a powerful message to the students in attendance, reminding them that Ja'Kease comes from the same community and that they, too, can achieve greatness by following in his footsteps.

Coach Clark, who has played a mentor-like role in Ja'Kease’s life, spoke warmly of their close relationship, likening himself to an uncle and expressing immense pride in Ja'Kease’s achievements. He encouraged other students in the room to recognize that they too have the potential to stand in Ja'Kease’s position one day with hard work and dedication. Mr. Lawrence, one of Woodland's dedicated custodial staff who wears the Woodland logo on his hat as a badge of honor, also took a moment to share his happiness and pride in seeing Ja'Kease take this next step.

Following the heartfelt speeches, Ja'Kease signed his official commitment to Mississippi Valley State, marking the culmination of years of hard work, perseverance, and dedication to his craft. His Woodland High School football teammates, close friends, his brother, and other family members were present to witness the historic moment and celebrate his success.

The event concluded with a celebratory atmosphere as attendees took pictures with Ja'Kease and shared in a cake-cutting to commemorate the occasion. The signing ceremony was more than just an event—it was a moment of inspiration for the entire Woodland community, proving that with determination and the right support system, anything is possible.

Woodland High School and Dorchester School District 4 are proud of Ja'Kease and wish him the best of luck and success in the future.
